A place to pray, close to home

Help a village build the masjid it has been waiting for.

In many villages across Africa there is no masjid at all. For Jumu’ah, people spread mats in a courtyard or under a tree. When the rain comes or the sun gets too fierce, the prayer moves into someone’s house, or it does not happen. Others walk several kilometres each way just to pray with a congregation.

A simple masjid changes that. It gives the whole village a roof for the five daily prayers, a room where children sit down with the Qur’an in the afternoon, and a place to gather for Ramadan, for Eid and for the janazah of a neighbour. Very often it becomes the first building a community looks after together.

When you give towards a masjid, you are giving Sadaqah Jariyah: a gift whose reward continues for as long as people pray in it. You do not need to fund a whole building. Every gift goes into the same project, and many families giving together is how most of these masjids get built.

What your gift builds

The masjids we support are modest and made to last. Your gift goes towards:

The foundations, walls and roof, built with local materials by local builders
A prayer hall big enough for the daily prayers and Jumu’ah
Wudu facilities, so people can wash before they pray
A corner or a room for the children’s Qur’an classes
Basic fittings such as mats, lighting and ventilation, so the masjid is ready to use from the first day

The exact design is agreed with each community and depends on the site, the number of worshippers and local building costs.

More than a prayer room

In a village, the masjid is not only a place for salah. It is where children learn to read the Qur’an, where food is shared in iftar and where everyone gather on the morning of Eid. When someone passes away, it is where the janazah is prayed.

Building a masjid is a big step for a small community, and most of them cannot do it alone. That is where donors come in: ordinary people giving what they can, so that a village that has been praying in the open finally has walls, a roof and a place that belongs to everyone.

The village asksLocal partners hear from a community that has no masjid, visit it, meet the elders and agree where the building should stand.
Foundations go inThe land is cleared and checked, then local builders dig and pour the foundations with materials bought in the area.
Walls and roofThe prayer hall, the wudu area and a room for children’s classes go up. The work gives several local families an income for the months it takes.
The first adhanThe masjid is handed to a local committee and the first prayer is held in it. We send you photos and an update from the field.
